F4U Corsair
"Out of the Sun"
Beautiful, dangerous, or both? The F4U dives out of its cloak of light.
The last propeller-driven fighter built in the US, the Vought F4U Corsair fought from Guadalcanal to Korea. It had a high top speed and could absorb a lot of combat damage. The distinctive bent wings reduced drag and gave the 13-foot propeller ground clearance. The Corsair had an 11 to 1 kill ratio against Japan in WWII, and shot down a MiG-15 jet in the Korean War.
