B-25 Mitchell
In this scene, the overcast sky and choppy waves highlight the uncertainty of the mission of the Doolittle Raiders. Can bombers really be launched off a ship? Can they reach Tokyo? Can they reach safety after the raid? Will it even make a difference?
Named for Billy Mitchell, the North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the finest bombers of its time. It was the first airplane to carry a 75-mm cannon into battle. This is the airplane of the Doolittle Raiders, dramatized in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Doolittle first proved that the B-25 could take off in less than 500 feet, then got 16 of them launched from the USS Hornet while still 800 miles from Japan. Taking the war to Tokyo, the raid was a major morale booster for American forces.
